Después de que se revaloró la serie original de Viaje a las Estrellas y vinieron nuevos éxitos con La Nueva Generación, Voyager, Estación Profunda Nueve y Enterprise, los aficionados al universo treekie se quedaron con ganas de mucho más. Ya en 1974, con cámara de aficionados de 16 milímetros se pudo filmar Paragon's, Paragon, que se podría traducir como el "Modelo del Modelo". Esta basada en una novela alternativa a las series de televisión: "Spock debe Morir", escrita por James Blish.
No es difícil interpretar porque Viaje a las Estrellas ha tenido tantas cualidades por las cuáles tiene tantos seguidores: la más importante es un futuro mejor, con tal entendimiento entre los seres humanos, sin importar su raza, rango social, orientación sexual, creencias religiosas o políticas.
Pero además la serie, en particular The Next Generation, ha tratado problemas que prácticamente nadie puede eludir: la paternidad; el envejecimiento; la muerte de un ser querido; la rebeldía de los hijos; el entrometimiento de los padres; los problemas que provoca el exceso de inteligencia en el trato con los demás; la timidez; la lealtad, la unión que hace la fuerza y la desunión que nos debilita; la responsabilidad que conlleva utilizar nuevos tratamientos médicos, que aunque no están comprobados, pueden ser la única opición para salvar una vida, la discapacidad; el temor por aventurarse a lo desconocido; la capacidad de encontrar nuevas soluciones a problemas que siempre acaban mal.
A partir del 2005, con el surgimiento de You Tube y el mejoramiento y abaratamiento de las cámaras digitales, la producción, edición y transmisión de películas se hizo más fácil y muchos escritores, estudiantes de actuación, diseño y producción, o simplemente aficionados unieron esfuerzos. Más fácil que producir algun nuevo concepto era seguir un modelo que ya hubiera probado su éxito. El fenómeno treekie les dió un impulso singular.
En Estados Unidos ha adquirido popularidad el modelo denominado Kick Starters la "patada inicial" para financiar producciones generalmente artísticas. Asi fue posible por ejemplo la filmación de "For the Love of Spock" (Por el amor de Spock) (2016) documental biográfico, disponible en Netflix, dirigido por Adam, el hijo de Leonard Nimoy, quien obtuvo el apoyo de 455 contribuyentes.
La película ganó el premio de la audiencia en el festival de cine de fantasía 2016, como mejor documental.
Alemania fue el primer país fuera de Estados Unidos, donde los aficionados filmaron una película basada en el universo de Viaje a las Estrellas, Digital Ghost (2000) (Fantasma Digital)
Entre 2007 y 2008 se filmó la película Star Trek, of Gods and Men, (Viaje a las estrellas, de Dioses y de Hombres) en la que participaron dos actores de reparto de la serie original, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) y Walter Koenig (Ckekov). También participaron actores de Voyager, como Warret Wang (Harry Kim) y Ethan Philips (Neelix) y de Estación Profunda Nueve.
La película no obtuvo la aprobación de la CBS, entonces propietaria de los derechos, por lo que tuvo que comercializarse en DVD o con donaciones de los usuarios de You Tube donde se puede ver con subtítulos en varios idiomas.
